Byblos Deposits: Material Culture and Ritual Practice between Egypt and the Levant (2100–1650 BC)

Byblos Deposits presents a comprehensive study of 47 votive deposits excavated from the temple precincts of ancient Byblos and dating to the first half of the Middle Bronze Age (c. 2000–1650 BC). Comprising more than 3,850 objects, these remarkably preserved assemblages provide unparalleled evidence for ritual practices, social organisation, and long-distance exchange. Particular attention is given to the presence and significance of Egyptian material culture, exploring how Egyptian objects were acquired, used, and deposited within local religious contexts. By placing these deposits within their archaeological and cultural settings, this volume sheds light on the dynamic relationship between Byblos and Egypt and offers new perspectives on interregional connectivity in the ancient Near East.
